From the Philippines to the USA: Bridging Cultures Through Education
A Greenheart Exchange Teacher
As an international educator through the Greenheart Exchange Program, I bring a unique global perspective to my teaching, fostering cultural exchange and enriching the learning environment for both students and colleagues. Greenheart Exchange, as my visa sponsor, emphasizes the importance of cultural immersion, professional growth, and cross-cultural collaboration in American classrooms.
My role extends beyond teaching mathematics to grades 7-12; I also serve as a cultural ambassador, sharing my heritage and promoting mutual understanding. In alignment with Greenheart’s expectations, I actively participate in cultural activities, professional development, and community engagement, ensuring a well-rounded exchange experience.
To my host school, my visa sponsor expects support in providing a welcoming environment, opportunities for cultural exchange, and collaboration on my professional responsibilities. This partnership between Greenheart Exchange, my host school, and myself is designed to create a meaningful and impactful educational journey for everyone involved.
From the Philippines
to the USA
Before joining the Greenheart Exchange Program, I proudly served as a Secondary School Mathematics Teacher under the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines for over five years. As part of the Philippine public school system, I was deeply involved in delivering quality education aligned with DepEd's mission to ensure that every Filipino learner receives equitable, accessible, and globally competitive education.
The Philippines is a vibrant country known for its rich cultural heritage, resilience, and passion for learning. In my role as a public school teacher, I worked with diverse groups of students, often adapting to large class sizes and limited resources while maintaining a commitment to fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and academic excellence.
Through my experiences, I developed a strong foundation in curriculum implementation, learner-centered strategies, and holistic student development, which I now bring to my current teaching role in the United States. My journey from the Philippines to the USA reflects my dedication to bridging cultures, sharing best practices, and creating impactful learning experiences for students.
Educational Background and Professional Affiliations
I graduated from Rosario Elementary School, a public school in Gumaca, Quezon, Philippines, in the 2009-2010 school year. Growing up, I learned to stand on my own feet, developing resilience and determination that guided me through my academic journey. My time at this public school laid a strong foundation for my future, instilling in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and self-reliance that continue to shape my life and career.
I graduated from Gumaca National High School in Gumaca, Quezon, Philippines, in the 2013-2014 school year. During my time there, I was honored to receive a full scholarship and graduate with honors. I was consistently ranked as the Top 1 in my class for four consecutive years, an achievement that reflected my dedication to academics. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved in various extracurricular activities, which helped me grow both academically and personally. My high school years were marked by hard work, perseverance, and humility, and they laid the foundation for my future success.
I graduated from Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Lopez, Quezon, in the 2017-2018 academic year, where I pursued a Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) majoring in Mathematics. I was honored to receive scholarships from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the "Scholars ng Bayan" program, which greatly supported my academic journey despite the many challenges I faced. While I encountered difficulties along the way, I remained determined and committed to my studies, never giving up on my goals. My time at PUP was a true test of resilience and perseverance, and it further fueled my passion for teaching and education.
In addition to my formal education, I pursued a short course in Bookkeeping National Certificate III (NC3), which I successfully completed in May 2019. This vocational training equipped me with practical skills that I later applied in teaching the TLE (Technology and Livelihood Education) Bookkeeping subject. The knowledge and experience I gained from this course have been invaluable in enhancing my teaching approach, allowing me to provide students with a deeper understanding of real-world applications in bookkeeping and financial management.
I continued my studies by pursuing a Master of Arts in Education (MAED) majoring in Mathematics, and I successfully graduated in February 2022. I was fortunate to receive a half-scholarship grant for my graduate studies, which was awarded due to my ongoing teaching role with the Department of Education (DepEd). This opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge in mathematics and further enhance my teaching skills, equipping me to better serve my students and contribute to the field of education.
I pursued my Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Leadership and Management, majoring in Mathematics Education, at Pacific InterContinental College (PIC). I successfully completed my degree and graduated in June 2024, while working as a teacher in the United States. This advanced study allowed me to deepen my expertise in educational leadership and mathematics education, equipping me with the skills to contribute meaningfully to both the academic and professional development of my students.
